There are two Nobel prize winners from Kolkata’s Presidency college including Abhijit. Here’s a look about all Nobel prize winners of the city Kolkata:
Abhijit Banerjee won the prestigious Nobel prize in 2019 along with his wife Esther Duflo and economist Michael Kremer for Economics. They were awarded for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty. Banerjee and Duflo became the sixth husband-wife couple to win the Nobel prize.
First couple was Marie and Pierre Curie in 1903 for physicist-chemist. American Banerjee was born in India and studied in Kolkata’s Presidency College (now University) and then completed his MA in economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi.
Amartya Sen won Nobel prize in the field of Economics. He was awarded in 1998 for his work in welfare economics, economics and social justice, public health, measure of well being of countries. He was also awarded with India’s Bharat Ratna in 1999. Sen was born in Hindu family in Santiniketan, Bolpur, West Bengal.
His father was a university professor of Chemistry in Dhaka. Rabindranath Tagore gave Amartya Sen his name. He was schooled at Dhaka pre-partition. And after partition he was brought back to Santiniketan. He completed is BA Economics from Presidency College of Kolkata. Then he became professor in Jadavpur University in Kolkata.
After that he teach at various institutions like Trinity College, London School of Economics and many other. Sen worked in UK and US since 1972 and after that he came back in Kolkata. He wrote an article entitled “More Than 100 Million Women are Mission” in The New York Review of Books and that article was controversial.
Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu honored in Catholic Church as Saint Teresa. She won the Nobel Prize in 1979. She was awarded this prize for the excellence work in the field of peace. Mother Teresa was born in an Albanian family on 26 August 1910. At the age of eighteen she moved to Ireland and then India, where she lived most of the time of her life. Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity that had 4500 nuns and was active in 133 countries.
Teresa win Ramon Magsaysay Peace prize in 1950. She arrived in India in 1929. She also setup her Missionaries for Charity (MoC) in Kolkata and serve dying, helpless and poor people till her death in 1997.
Teresa operated 517 missions in over 100 countries by 1996. Teresa received Padma Shri in 1962 from Indian Government and after that Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International understanding. Some Hindu people of Kolkata worshipped her as a deity.
Everyone knows about Rabindranath Tagore. There is no one in India who don’t know about this great personality. Rabindranath Tagore got his Nobel Prize in 1913. He was awarded for his work in the field of literature. One more thing, Tagore was the first non-European, non-white and first lyricist who won this prestigious award.
He was also known as the Bard of Bengal. Tagore reshaped Bengali Literature, music and also Indian art. Tagore started to write poetry at the age of eight. Tagore was belong to Thakur Bari, the most aristocratic families of that time in Calcutta.
Gitanjali, Gora and Ghare-Baire are his best known works. Bangladesh and India accept his compositions for their national anthem. India’s national anthem “Jana Gana Mana” and Bangladesh’s national anthem “Amar Shonar Bangla” are his best compositions. Kushari was the original surname of Tagore. Tagore’s nick name was Rabi and he was born on 7 May 1861 in Calcutta.
Sir Ronald Ross was a British doctor. He receive Nobel Prize in 1902 for his excellence work in the field of medicine. He was the first British Nobel laureate. In 1897 he proved that malaria was transmitted by mosquitoes. Also he wrote a number of poems, published many novels and composed songs. Besides of it he was an artist and mathematician. He served his 25 years of life in Indian Medical service.
Ross was the eldest of ten children and born in Almora. He was also awarded by Cameron Prize, Albert Medal and Manson Medal. In 1889 Ross was married with Bessie Bloxam and they two daughters and two sons. Ross died after a long illness and asthma attack.
